From reports, 76% of Japanese immigrants to Canada from 2001 to 2021 were women. In other words, almost 14,000 women have emigrated from Japan to Canada in the last two decades.
Canadian Visa Professionals reported a major cause for this great move among Japanese women. The reason was stated to be the serious gender inequality in Japan.
According to the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, over 550,000 Japanese citizens live and work abroad as permanent residents. Sixty-two percent of these people are women. This situation is a result of entrenched gender inequality in the country. Some other reasons are the frustration with Japan’s slow economy and the fear of natural disasters.

Japan is making little to no progress in women’s empowerment. This is evident as the country is consistently rated 120th among 150 countries in the annual Global Gender Gap Report by the World Economic Forum.

The movement of Japanese women abroad is a great advantage for Canada, said Jacqueline Holler, a University of Northern British Columbia professor. Holler added that Canada is doing a great job in attracting educated immigrants. On the other hand, Japan should be accommodating to women’s aspirations.
